Variables

Independent Variable: Chocolate flavor

Experimental Design

I'm conducting a project that will be examining what flavor chocolate melts faster. I will need a kitchen stove, so I will be conductiong the experiment at my house. There will be three people involved, one of my parents to supervise, my little sister to take pictures, and i will be writing the data and observations and doing the experiment.
Four different flavors of chocolate will be testing each flavor five times, to then get the average. All the data will be copied on to a printed out data table. When all the data is on the spreadsheet, I will copy it to the computer at school. My sister will have my digital camera. She will be taking pictures of the experiment. When I'm done the experiment, I will put the pictures on the computer and, email them to my science teacher. I will also put some pictures on my wiki-page and print some pictures out for the science fair display board.

Materials List

1. Pencil/Pen
2. Copy of spreadsheet
3. Pan
4. Spoon
5. Oven
6. Digital camera
7. Chocolate (all flavors)
8. Three people

Detailed Procedure

1. Gather all materials in kitchen.
2. Put pan on stove. Turn stove on medium/four or three
3. Put dark chocolate in pan.
4. Start timer.
5. Stir at times.
6. Write observations of the chocolate and whats happening.
7. When chocolate is soft, stop timer and turn stove off.
8. Clean the pan for next chocolate.
9. Put milk chocolate in pan.
10. Repeat steps 4 to 8.
11. Put white chocolate in pan.
12. Repeat steps 4 to 8.
13. Put mint chocolate in pan.
14. Repeat steps 4 to 8.
15. Write the rest of observations down or some that missed.

Background Research

Dark chocolate is almost the same as milk chocolate but has no milk added and is less sweet end. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, antioxidants may protect against high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.
This book talks about when a solid is heated it turns into a liquid. My science fair project is going to be hard chocolate, i will be melting the chocolate so i will be heating it, so that is a solid changing into a liquid. I will be using State and Matter in my project.
Chocolate is not like butter, it doesn't melt in 2seconds, it takes time to melt. When melting chocolate in a pan don't use a lot of chocolate, just a little. When the chocolate after melting turns back into a solid, the coco butter in the chocolate forms a crystal structure. The cool thing about it though is that the coco butter is that the crystal structure, they take on the temperature. So if the temperature is on high when melting the crystals will be lost, but if low then the crystals will be big and cool own its own.
If you want to melt chocolate fast, use a microwave, but if u want to get the time that it took to melt use a pan and a timer. Microwaves wont give you the time u need that it took to melt the chocolate which is what i need. With the pan you can use a timer and get a good result.

Data Analysis

Conclusion

The original purpose of this experiment was to see what flavor chocolate melted first. The results of the the experiment were that the ark chocolate melted fastest at 2 minutes and 16 seconds. Then Milk chocolate melted in three minutes and nineteen seconds, while white chocolate melted in sixteen minutes nine seconds.

Discussion

My hypothesis was the dark chocolate would melt faster followed by milk chocolate then white chocolate. My results did support my hypothesis. There wasn't really a pattern in my experiment, but all the chocolates times were very off. The time in each trial did not change much for the same chocolate but it did with the others.Ex. Dark: Trial 1: 2:22 min Trial 2: 1:48 min Trial 3: 2:28 Trial 4: 1:40 min Trial 5: 1:50 min, Milk: Trial 1: 3.27 min Trial 2: 3.48 min Trial 3: 2.38 Trial 4: 2.43 min Trial 5: 2.42 min, White: Trial 1: 11.18 min Trial 2: 18.14 min Trial 3: 13.48 min Trial 4: 19.57 min Trial 5: 18.06 min. The time changed a little bit but not a lot. The relationship between the independent (Chocolate flavor) and dependent (melting time minute) changes. (The dark chocolate would have melted faster because the darker it is then more heat it will get that's why the white chocolate doesn't melt fast.)?
If I could have improved this experiment I would have made sure the heat of the room and water was the same for each trial. My results may have been more accurate. An interesting future study might involve looking up the right temperature the room should be when doing to experiment or having the same brand chocolate so it doesn't mess it up.
